Shoulder Pain

Reviewed by Sarah Lashley, Certified Precision Neuromuscular Therapist and Clinic Director, on .

Shoulder

A deep ache in the shoulder, or a jab with one particular reach, and you can't quite tell where it's coming from.

What it is

Shoulder pain can come from many muscles: the rotator cuff, the deltoid, the muscles that steady the shoulder blade, and pain referred down from the neck. That's why generic shoulder treatment often misses. The source is often not where the ache is strongest.

What makes it worse

It often flares with overhead or repetitive use, rounded sitting and screen posture, and carrying or lifting that makes the shoulder brace under weight. The reach that hurts is often a useful clue.

How PNMT helps

Your therapist starts with your pain history, then uses range-of-motion and resistance testing to find which muscles around your shoulder, shoulder blade, and neck are driving your pain. Treatment is precise work on those muscles, with your feedback steering it until the referral is reproduced. If testing points to a structural or other non-muscular cause, your therapist will say so and refer you on.

What to expect & how long

Your reach, including overhead and behind-the-back positions, is retested as you go, so you can feel it loosen. Stubborn shoulder pain usually takes a few visits. It helps to keep telling your therapist what is and isn't changing.

What clients say

I met Sarah last year in September and I have used neuromuscular therapists before and she is amazing. She dedicates herself on keeping up with latest education. When you go there with a pain she will make sure she listens to your needs and try to ensure you are pain free by the time you leave your appt. depending on how severe it could take a few sessions but she won't stop until she figures out the source of the problem! I am a dentist and come to therapy about 1x month. I have elbow and shoulder pain as well as IT band issues. If I come in with pain I leave feeling almost 100 % if not better. She is a wonderful person and makes sure to give her clients at home care instructions. I'm so happy to have found her!

Yu was wonderful. I have been having hip pain for a while now and after my assessment appointment tonight, I feel so much better. She found every tight spot and adhesion and worked it all out. She also worked on my neck and shoulders (too much sitting at the computer at work) and my neck has not felt this good in ages. I would highly recommend Yu for muscle treatment and Somavida any day. I will be going regularly.

Somavida has been a Godsend for me and my husband and friends. I started going to Sarah over a year ago, first to help with my neck/shoulder issues, and now my hip. I have referred her business to several of my friends and my husband, who all have been very pleased. Sarah has a great personality and is loving and thoughtful about her practice. She listens and is gifted to find the root of the problem. She really is a gift from God! Several of my friends have also seen Yu, and they have been very pleased with her. I can't speak highly enough of Somavida and all their staff!
